Mastercard has opened early access to its Agent Pay for Machines platform, allowing developers to test payment tools for autonomous AI agents. The initiative follows successful pilots involving Coinbase, Base, Cloudflare, and other partners.

Mastercard aims to help AI agents purchase digital services independently while respecting spending limits approved by their owners. However, the platform remains in testing and has not reached commercial availability.

AI Agents Test Automated Payments

During a Cloudflare Connect demonstration, marketing agency Hype assigned an AI agent to prepare a protein bar campaign. The agent purchased social media research from AIsa and generated eight campaign images through Cloudflare AI Gateway. Consequently, the demonstration recorded nine payments within Hype’s approved budget.

Additionally, Mastercard supports card, bank account, and stablecoin payments through its platform. Developers can now test its APIs and recommend improvements before a wider release.

Coinbase and Base Enable Blockchain Settlement

The demonstration used Coinbase’s x402 protocol to authorize payments when services requested payment. The system verified signed payment vouchers before providers delivered their services. Moreover, merchants can redeem batched vouchers later instead of settling every transaction individually.

Coinbase Developer Platform supplied the agent’s wallet infrastructure, while Base handled blockchain settlement. Meanwhile, Mastercard-owned BVNK processed payments through its Global Money Platform, supporting fiat currencies and stablecoins. Hence, sellers can receive funds through their preferred currencies and payment networks.
