Solana has activated its Alpenglow consensus upgrade on mainnet, cutting transaction finality from 12.8 seconds to approximately 150 milliseconds. Anza, a core engineering team behind Solana, completed the transition on October 21, replacing TowerBFT with a protocol designed to accelerate blockchain settlement. The upgrade could strengthen Solana’s appeal for payment providers, trading platforms, and financial institutions requiring faster transaction guarantees.

Alpenglow Reshapes Solana’s Transaction Settlement

According to the press release, the migration occurred at slot 459,653,000, around 14:00 UTC, as independent validators coordinated the transition. Consequently, users and applications could benefit from faster settlement without rebuilding the existing blockchain ledger.

Finality determines when a transaction becomes irreversible. Hence, the shorter settlement window could help exchanges credit deposits faster and merchants process payments more efficiently.

Moreover, the improvement could support financial applications requiring near-instant transaction confirmation. However, faster finality alone does not guarantee broader institutional adoption, which also depends on security, reliability, and regulatory requirements.

Testing Prepared the Network for Deployment

Anza developed Alpenglow and implemented it in Agave, its validator software. Additionally, the team conducted security competitions, penetration testing, and migration rehearsals before deployment.

The upgrade follows research published in May 2025 and extensive testing across Solana’s development environments. Significantly, independent validator operators coordinated the activation, reflecting Solana’s decentralized network structure.

Besides improving settlement speed, Alpenglow could complement future scalability proposals. Jump Crypto’s Firedancer team previously proposed removing Solana’s 60-million compute-unit block limit, potentially allowing capacity to scale with validator hardware.
