Elon Musk’s SpaceXAI, formerly known as xAI, unveiled its new artificial intelligence (AI) model, Grok 4.5. Musk has claimed the new model is approaching Anthropic’s flagship AI systems’ capabilities level while delivering faster performance and significantly lower operating costs.

Elon Musk’s SpaceXAI Unveils its Latest AI Model

Elon Musk’s AI company, SpaceXAI, has unveiled its latest AI model, Grok 4.5. The launch marks the company’s first major AI release since it went public last month, a move that made Musk the world’s first trillionaire.

The new model is built on SpaceXAI’s 1.5 trillion-parameter V9 foundation model and fine-tuned with data from the acquired coding startup Cursor. Grok 4.5 is designed to handle a wide variety of knowledge-based tasks that businesses are increasingly expecting AI to handle. These range from coding and complex agentic tasks to research, writing, office administration, data science, finance, legal analysis, and other professional workflows.

Grok 4.5 Pricing Strategy Puts Pressure on AI Rivals

SpaceXAI has adopted an aggressive pricing strategy for Grok 4.5, setting it at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens (with cached inputs at $0.50). This makes the model a high-value option with near-frontier performance at much lower cost than top competitors.

For comparison, Opus 4.7, Anthropic’s advanced AI model, is priced at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens. OpenAI’s higher-priced model, Sol, costs $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output tokens, while its less expensive model, Luna, costs $1 per million input and $6 per million output tokens.

Musk Claims Grok 4.5 Is Nearing Opus 4.7 as AI Race Intensifies

According to Musk, the new model is approaching the capabilities of Anthropic’s flagship AI systems while offering faster performance and lower operating costs. “Our internal assessment is that Grok 4.5 is roughly comparable to Opus 4.7, but much faster. The combination of capability, faster speed and lower cost is what makes it competitive,” Musk wrote on X.

Musk also said the company is making Grok 4.5 publicly available as of July 9, 2026, after strong feedback from users who participated in its beta testing program. Grok 4.5 intensifies the race among frontier AI labs by offering competitive performance at substantially reduced costs.

Notably, the launch coincides with OpenAI’s rollout of GPT 5.6, its latest flagship model, which was reportedly delayed by security-related reviews under the Trump administration. Meanwhile, Anthropic’s flagship Fable 5 recently drew attention following a short-term ban in the US over security concerns.

Against that backdrop, Musk said Grok 4.5 prioritizes real-world usefulness and advanced cybersecurity capabilities. He added that engineers at Tesla and SpaceX are already using the model for demanding technical work.
