- Elon Musk says Starlink will help connect remote areas of India without reliable internet.
- India still has thousands of villages without 4G coverage despite major investments in digital infrastructure.
- SpaceX has built 20 Starlink gateway sites in India as it prepares for a service launch.
Elon Musk says Starlink will help provide internet access to parts of India where mobile and broadband services are poor or unavailable. He made the comment on X after users shared stories about internet problems in remote areas.
“Starlink will be of great help to areas of India that have bad or no Internet and even no mobile coverage,” Musk wrote.
He said no country, including the United States, has perfect internet coverage. He believes Starlink will fill gaps in areas that need reliable connectivity most.
Musk was responding to X user Nitin Meshram, who described how difficult life can be in villages without mobile service. Meshram said his village has had no mobile network “since Independence.”
He also shared how he once missed a birthday message from a friend who is a senior lawyer. Because there was no network, the message never reached him, and his friend initially thought he had ignored it.
Another X user, Kshatrap, said people in rural Saurashtra also face poor mobile coverage. He said major providers such as Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea still struggle to provide reliable indoor service.
He said Starlink will help, especially during emergencies when people need to contact others but cannot get a mobile signal.
India Still Has Internet Gaps
India is expanding its digital infrastructure, but some remote areas still have poor or no internet and mobile coverage. As of May 2026, about 11,256 villages still lacked 4G coverage.
Meanwhile, India had 1.093 billion internet subscriptions in March 2026. Rural areas had 440.87 million. Internet access was also much lower in rural areas, with about 48 subscriptions per 100 people, compared with 127 per 100 people in cities.
India has invested heavily in BharatNet to improve rural internet access. The project has laid more than 850,000 kilometers of fiber-optic cable and connected about 221,000 local village councils. But by June 2026, only 80,472 of these councils had working Points of Presence.
These numbers show that building internet infrastructure across India does not guarantee reliable service in remote areas.
Starlink provides another solution because its satellites deliver internet without requiring the same network of fibre cables or mobile towers. Most Indian internet users also rely on wireless connections. Only 4.26% of internet subscriptions were wired connections in March 2026.
Starlink Prepares for India
SpaceX has been preparing to launch Starlink in India. Lauren Dreyer, a SpaceX executive, said at the India Mobile Congress that Starlink has already built 20 gateway sites in the country.
She said Starlink supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of bringing internet access to everyone in India. Key uses include online classes in remote areas, telemedicine and emergency response.
“With Starlink, people can get connected within minutes, not years,” Dreyer said. Starlink will be particularly useful in mountains, islands and remote villages where building fibre networks or mobile towers is difficult or too expensive.
The service also provides a critical communications option during natural disasters. Portable Starlink terminals have been used in other countries to provide internet when regular networks are damaged.
In India, this gives emergency teams another way to communicate during floods, earthquakes and storms.
Starlink is also developing Direct to Cell technology, which allows some 4G phones to connect directly to satellites when there are no nearby mobile towers. This technology requires approval from Indian regulators and agreements with local mobile operators.
Musk Criticises India’s Starlink Approval Process
Musk’s latest comments also come after he criticised the process for approving Starlink in India. Earlier, Musk claimed that “certain oligarchs” were trying to block Starlink to protect their control of India’s telecom market.
However, his latest comments focused less on that dispute and more on Starlink’s role in connecting people who lack reliable internet or mobile service. He believes Starlink represents another connectivity option alongside existing mobile and fiber networks in places where traditional infrastructure is difficult to build.
