Elon Musk believes artificial intelligence will exceed the combined intelligence of humanity within five years. He sees a future where AI outperforms humans in nearly every task and leaves people no longer in control within the next decade.

Speaking in an interview, Musk said the rapid pace of AI development makes it difficult to imagine humans maintaining control once AI becomes vastly more intelligent.

Musk Predicts AI-Driven “Age of Abundance”

Musk said AI could soon handle virtually every task better than humans, with the exception of “being human.”

He argued that if current progress continues without major global disruptions, the world could enter an “age of amazing abundance,” where AI and robotics dramatically increase productivity and make goods and services widely accessible.

“This may sound preposterous,” Musk said, adding that by 2036 people may look back and see that prediction materialize.

Humans Unlikely To Remain in Control

When asked whether humans would still be in control in 10 years, Musk said that outcome is unlikely.

He compared the future relationship between humans and advanced AI to the relationship between humans and chimpanzees, arguing that once intelligence differences become sufficiently large, control naturally shifts toward the more intelligent entity.

Despite that view, Musk said he has adopted a more optimistic outlook, believing society should focus on maximizing AI’s benefits while reducing potential risks.

AI Risks Remain, but Progress Appears Unstoppable

Musk acknowledged that AI and robotics still pose risks, saying the probability of catastrophic outcomes is “not zero.”

However, he argued that halting AI development is no longer realistic because competition across the industry continues to accelerate innovation.

He noted that even his early efforts to create OpenAI as a counterweight to Google’s AI dominance ultimately contributed to faster industry-wide development, alongside the later emergence of Anthropic.

“All roads lead to acceleration of AI,” Musk said, adding that humanity should work to minimize bad outcomes rather than attempt to stop progress altogether.

Calls for Immediate AI Safety Coordination

Musk also called for leading AI companies to begin holding regular meetings weekly or every two weeks to discuss emerging safety and security concerns.

Rather than relying solely on government oversight, he proposed allowing competing AI developers to review one another’s frontier models before release. He said rivals have the technical expertise and incentive to identify dangerous capabilities.

If competitors raise serious concerns that a company fails to address, Musk said governments could then step in with regulatory action.

Given the speed of AI breakthroughs, Musk said such coordination should begin immediately rather than waiting months for formal regulatory frameworks.
