Elon Musk believes artificial intelligence could move beyond the combined intelligence of humanity within the next four to five years.
He shared the view on X while responding to comments from XPRIZE founder Peter Diamandis, who argued that expanding into space would remove limits on human creativity and problem-solving.
Musk’s latest forecast came as reports around Anthropic’s Claude AI and its Mythos model opened a fresh debate over how quickly advanced AI systems are improving.
Musk Shortens Timeline for Superintelligence
Musk said digital intelligence may exceed the sum of all human intelligence within four or five years. He also described the coming AI wave as a “supersonic tsunami.”
Peter Diamandis, in his newsletter, said the cost of AI models has fallen sharply, with token prices dropping about 280 times in two years.
He also pointed to expectations that recursive self-improvement, where AI systems design better versions of themselves, could begin within the next few years.
Diamandis wrote that the cost of intelligence is collapsing while computing power keeps rising. He argued that this could compress decades of scientific progress into only a few years, affecting biology, chemistry, medicine, robotics, and manufacturing.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has previously said systems with the equivalent output of an entire country of geniuses could appear between late 2026 and 2027.
Mythos Claims Spark Security Debate
Discussions around Musk’s comments intensified after claims surrounding Claude AI’s Mythos model. A report highlighted comments from Senator Mark Warner, who said General Joshua Rudd, head of the National Security Agency and US Cyber Command, revealed that Mythos had penetrated nearly all classified systems within hours.
According to AI enthusiasts following the development, the event showed that traditional encryption relies on the assumption that attackers have limited intelligence and limited time.
They argued that highly advanced AI changes that equation by attacking the logic behind security systems rather than simply attempting to break codes.
Supporters See Abundance, Critics Warn of Risks
Diamandis outlined a future where AI accelerates scientific discoveries, reduces the cost of intelligence, and powers hundreds of millions of humanoid robots by 2031. He cited Musk’s expectation that global GDP could expand tenfold over the next decade, creating a world economy worth more than $1 quadrillion.
He also pointed to forecasts that AI could help solve diseases, extend human lifespan, and lower the cost of transport and physical labor.
However, not everyone shares the optimism. Retired data engineer Charles Van Dien argued that intelligence is not purely about knowledge and retrieval.
He said wisdom remains a human quality and warned that extremely powerful AI tools could fall into malicious hands, creating risks that were previously limited by education, economics, and access.
