Diversified financial services and infrastructure company Galaxy Digital has launched a $5 million fund to enhance research on Bitcoin quantum security. According to an official post on X, the company stated that it is preparing for a future that could occur quickly, considering how slow it is for Bitcoin to update by design.

Preparing Ahead of the Rainy Day

According to Galaxy Digital, the newly launched fund is its way of contributing to the Bitcoin network’s development before it becomes urgent. It highlighted the pillars of its latest initiative, including up to $5 million in developer grants for post-quantum solutions, ongoing research and publishing via Galaxy Research, and a Quantum Advisory Council of leading experts.

Galaxy further noted that its Developer Grant Program funds will focus on Quantum-resistant upgrade proposals, ranging from informal proposals to formal Bitcoin Improvement Proposals (BIPs). It will also cover work on post-quantum cryptography and signature schemes for Bitcoin, wallet/custodian migration tooling, formal security audits, and code review.

The firm emphasized the essence of Bitcoin security, noting that it has always depended on people showing up early to defend the protocol. Galaxy Digital seized the fund announcement opportunity to invite Bitcoin ecosystem members, including developers, institutions, and researchers, to join the program.

Tackling an Existential Threat to Bitcoin

Notably, quantum computing poses an existential threat to Bitcoin’s ownership model by exposing vulnerabilities in its digital signature algorithms. Although the threat is not immediate, developers are actively upgrading core designs to prepare against potential eventualities.

The core threat of quantum computing to the Bitcoin network lies in Shor’s Algorithm, a quantum process capable of solving complex discrete logarithm problems exponentially faster than any classical computer. While it is mathematically impossible for a classical computer to reverse Bitcoin’s Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA), a sufficiently powerful quantum computer can effortlessly derive a private key from an exposed public key.

Galaxy Digital’s latest initiative aims to mitigate against this and other existential threats potentially posed by quantum computing. Other entities in the Bitcoin ecosystem are also working toward a secure future. For instance, the Bitcoin development community introduced the BIP-360 and BIP-361 into Bitcoin code repositories. These proposals create Post-Quantum Resistant (P2QRH) address types and lay out a phased “sunset” migration path to force users to move funds out of legacy, vulnerable addresses.
