Greece’s parliament approved a 10% crypto tax on investment gains on November 5, establishing the country’s first comprehensive framework for taxing digital assets. The legislation exempts annual gains of up to €500, while further guidance will address implementation.
A senior Finance Ministry official told Reuters that transparency and audit directives will follow in the coming weeks. Authorities have no revenue estimate because widespread use of overseas platforms makes Greece’s cryptocurrency market difficult to measure.
How the Crypto Tax Applies
The ministry’s published crypto tax framework excludes exchanges between cryptocurrencies from taxable capital gains. Gains generally reflect the difference between acquisition and transfer prices, with an average purchase price applied when investors acquire assets through multiple transactions.
Staking, lending, and liquidity provision receive different treatment. The ministry classifies returns from these activities as interest, subject to a 15% rate rather than the 10% levy on trading gains.
What the Additional Rules Cover
Investors also have 12 months from the law’s publication to voluntarily declare gains from earlier transfers. Eligible declarations avoid fines and interest under specified conditions, while cryptocurrency sales remain exempt from the Digital Transaction Fee.
Other crypto tax regulations include those for employee benefits, inheritance, and gifting. Crypto assets for employee benefits, partnerships, or stockholder benefits are evaluated when the recipient receives the asset. Inheritance and gifts are valued by the platform price on the previous day.
