- Reddit’s growing role in AI citations is letting subtle marketing shape answers across major AI platforms.
- AEO tactics blur real discussion and promotion, making AI-generated responses harder for users to verify.
- Healthcare and shopping queries face higher risk as AI summaries may reflect hidden commercial influence.
A growing problem is quietly changing what millions of people see when they ask AI tools questions online. New reports reveal that coordinated promotional campaigns on Reddit now influence answers generated by platforms such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity.
The practice, known as answer engine optimization (AEO), targets AI systems directly. Instead of chasing clicks, marketers aim to shape the responses AI tools provide. Consequently, experts and moderators now warn that users may unknowingly receive information influenced by hidden commercial interests.
The issue recently surfaced inside Reddit’s r/Biohackers community, which has roughly 830,000 members. According to reports, moderators restricted new posts about peptides and hormone replacement therapy after companies flooded discussions with promotional content.
However, these posts did not resemble traditional advertisements. Instead, marketers designed them to look like authentic conversations that AI systems could later reference in generated answers.

Why Reddit Has Become a Prime Target
There is no denying that Reddit wields immense power within AI search ecosystems. In the time period from August 2024 to June 2025, Reddit was the top-cited source of information by both Google AI Overviews and Perplexity. Furthermore, ChatGPT also cited Reddit more frequently than almost any other site. According to reports, 21% of the responses by Google’s AI Overviews mentioned Reddit.
That visibility has created strong incentives for marketers. Rather than buying advertisements, companies increasingly seed discussions inside popular communities. Hence, they can shape AI responses indirectly. According to reports, operators often use accounts with established histories. Some campaigns even pay real people to post, making detection more difficult.
“You literally just sort of know what to look for,” one moderator said. “But the problem is you don’t want to become punitive to the people who aren’t doing this maliciously.”
Healthcare and Shopping Face Growing Risks
The consequences extend beyond online discussions. Healthcare experts worry that promotional posts could influence AI-generated guidance about peptides, supplements, and hormone therapies. Consequently, users may receive recommendations shaped by vendors rather than neutral information.
Moreover, consumer behavior continues shifting toward AI platforms. Research shows that 31.4% of AI users searched for product links through generative AI in February. Additionally, more than 60% of consumers now begin everyday tasks inside AI platforms.
Traditional SEO spam often appeared through visible links. However, AEO works differently. AI systems summarize information into a single response. Therefore, users rarely see the original source that influenced the answer. As AI adoption accelerates, that hidden influence raises new questions about trust, transparency, and digital information quality.
