  • India’s CPI report revealed inflation rose to 4.45%, less than the expected 4.5%.
  • As inflation remains elevated, the RBI is expected to take a cautious policy approach.
  • A cautious approach could strengthen the rupee and weaken cryptocurrencies.

The National Statistical Office (NSO) of India has released the Consumer Price Index (CPI) report today. The report revealed that the country’s retail inflation surged to 4.45% in July, up from 4.38% in June. Although the inflation rate is slightly below the expected 4.5%, July marks another month of rising prices in India.

Now, all are watching the potential monetary policies of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). As inflation rates remain elevated, the RBI is likely to take a cautious approach to further rate cuts. This could have significant implications for the country’s rupee and the crypto market.

How Will 4.45% India CPI Influence RBI Policy?

Driven by higher food prices, the India CPI report has hit another high of 4.45%. Food inflation also rose to 5.52%, making it the main driver of inflation. While the data suggests inflation is still within the RBI’s 2-6% tolerance band, the central bank’s tighter approach is less likely. But investors and traders are still waiting to see what the RBI decides on interest rates.

Experts are weighing in on the matter. For example, Radhika RAO, Senior Economist at DBS Bank, stated,

“India’s July inflation outcome is unlikely to materially alter the policy calculus. Food prices continue to normalise, but pace should be gradual as sowing activity has picked up, helped by a narrower rainfall shortfall in August vs June-July.”

Rupee and Crypto in Focus

Amid the inflation hike, the focus is now shifted to the RBI’s potential policy decision and its impact on the rupee and the crypto market. If the RBI takes a more cautious stance on cutting rates, the rupee could find some support after weeks of volatility. As CoinEdition reported, the rupee has been facing increasing pressure recently. But with the RBI’s tightened rules, the local currency could see strength. At the same time, as food prices continue to rise, it could negatively impact the rupee as concerns about inflation staying higher remain.

Meanwhile, the crypto market could see a more indirect impact. A cautious RBI approach could reduce liquidity and risk appetite among Indian investors. This could significantly limit demand for cryptocurrencies in the country. On the other hand, if inflation concerns persist, some investors may turn to Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as alternative stores of value.

What Does India’s Rising Inflation Mean for BTC and USDT?

As Indian traders keep a close eye on the performance of the rupee amid rising inflation, the BTC/INR pairs could face heightened volatility. If the rupee depreciates amid the RBI’s potential hawkish stance, it can drive the value of INR in the BTC/INR pair even if BTC remains stable against the US dollar. This could encourage more traders in India to participate, as they tend to benefit from the price changes.

If the rupee’s value declines, traders would opt for USDT as it offers exposure to USD, which still remains high. Stronger demand for USDT could also increase the USDT/INR premium. This means that USDT may trade above the equivalent dollar-rupee exchange rate.
