- HFT firms use advanced technology and speed to execute trades faster than retail investors.
- Retail investors face challenges in matching the speed and technology of HFTs.
- SEBI data shows that 93% of individual F&O traders incurred losses over three years.
India’s stock market has seen a significant rise in retail participation. While more individual traders are entering the market, high-frequency trading firms (HFTs) have become the most important part of the space. As HFT firms use powerful technology to execute trades in fractions of a second, this has created a notable gap between ordinary investors and professional trading firms. Thus, there is now a rising question about the risks retail traders face in India.
HFT Firms Have a Speed Advantage Over Retail Traders
According to Bloomberg analysts, HFT firms operate at a speed that cannot be imagined by ordinary traders. They use advanced computers and algorithms to track market movements. This helps them place orders within fractions of a second.
Notably, speed is a crucial aspect in the Indian stock market. This is mainly because prices can move very quickly. So, if traders are not able to place orders at the correct time, it can lead to huge losses. This is where HFT firms have an edge. They can spot small price differences and act instantly. Thus, these firms can make thousands or millions of small trades, allowing smaller gains to add up over time.
On the other hand, retail traders rely on ordinary and easy-to-use trading apps. They make decisions based on the available market data. Unlike HFT firms, they do not have high-level technology, connectivity, or computing power.
India’s Options Market Boom Brings More Retail Traders
Amid this backdrop, the rapid rise of India’s options market is also worth mentioning. Over the recent years, more traders have entered the derivatives market. As traders can take positions with smaller amounts and without buying the asset in the options market, it has become more popular in India.
Another major reason for the options market’s expansion in the country is the growth of mobile trading apps. In addition, financial content on social media platforms also helps people to know more about the market and try short-term trading strategies. Reportedly, individual derivatives traders rose from less than 1 million in 2019 to about 8 million in 2026.
Retail Traders Face Heavy Losses in India’s Options Market
The market growth also comes with serious losses. According to a SEBI report, about 93% of individual traders in the equity futures and options market faced losses of ₹1.8 lakh crore over a period of three years. In FY24 alone, more than 91% of the traders lost their funds, with the total losses hitting ₹74,812 crore.
One of the major reasons for these losses is the nature of the market. Traders can take large positions with a smaller amount. While this helps gain profits, it can also lead to heavy losses. As noted by SEBI, the structure of derivatives could multiply losses when a trade moves in the wrong direction.
SEBI’s Jane Street Case Puts HFT Trading Under Scrutiny
As HFT firms continue to show their presence in India, it has also sparked attention from regulators. This is evident from SEBI’s action against Jane Street over its trading activities in India’s stock market. As per reports, SEBI alleged that Jane Street’s trading strategy influenced prices in a way that helped the firm benefit from its options positions. Such activity could have significant implications for other market participants too, stated SEBI.
However, Jane Street argued that some of its trading activity was part of index arbitrage. This means that traders try to profit from price differences between financial products, such as an index and its derivatives. The strategy involves buying the cheaper product and selling the more expensive one.
Why HFTs Still Matter in India’s Stock Market
Despite these concerns, HFT firms are still considered important in the Indian stock market. One of the key aspects is liquidity. HFTs help provide liquidity, making it easier for traders to buy or sell an asset without causing major price changes.
The platforms also use arbitrage strategies to take advantage of small price differences between related assets. When they buy in one market and sell in another, it helps bring prices closer together, thus making the market more efficient.
What India’s HFT Growth Means for Retail Traders
Interestingly, the growth of HFT firms in India is changing the way retail traders participate in India’s stock market. Although retail traders use faster trading apps and real-time market data, speed still matters. They cannot match the technology and speed used by HFTs. Thus, the bigger concern is a notable gap in technology, information processing, and trading experience.
SEBI’s Regulatory Changes to Reshape India’s Trading Market
Amid changing stock market conditions, SEBI has launched several regulatory changes to India’s derivatives space. The regulator intends to make options trading safer for individual traders by reducing excessive speculation.
The regulator has also taken initiatives to address concerns about the growing volume of options trading. To reduce risks, the agency has introduced measures linked to contract sizes, weekly expiries, and the overall framework for index derivatives.

Impressively, the stock market of India is facing significant changes as retail participation, options trading, and technology continue to grow. Retail traders now have easier access to the market, while HFT firms also continue to function with advanced systems.
HFT firms are likely to remain an important part of India’s stock market. This underscores the importance of understanding the risks involved for retail traders.
