- TOTAL2, ETHBTC and CMC ratios show defensive rotation, not genuine altseason yet.
- Individual altcoin ATHs are narrative-driven, not structure-driven, until all three signals confirm.
- Van de Poppe compares the current setup to DeFi Summer 2020, with 200 to 400% gains already seen.
Altseason calls are flooding crypto social media. Individual coins are posting 200% to 400% gains. Exchange volume for altcoins outside the top five assets is quietly rising. Some tokens are hitting all-time highs.
Two analysts are looking at the same data and reaching completely different conclusions. The distinction matters because it determines whether the right strategy now is to buy broadly or to pick very selectively.
The Case Against Altseason
Analyst VirtualBacon identified three specific ratios that define the difference between a structural altseason and a selective altcoin bull run.
TOTAL2 divided by BTC strips Bitcoin out and shows whether the rest of the market is gaining ground against it. For genuine altseason, this ratio needs a decisive weekly close above cycle-low support. It has not happened. The ratio is sitting near cycle lows.
ETHBTC is the classic altseason leading indicator. Historically, Ethereum receives institutional rotation first, and the flow cascades into mid- and small-caps from there. ETHBTC has been grinding in the same range for months. No cascade has started.
CMC20 versus CMC100 is the third signal. Real altseason sends capital into smaller coins, which then outperform mega-caps. Currently, CMC20 is outperforming CMC100, which is the defensive rotation pattern rather than the altseason one.
His conclusion:
- Individual ATHs during this period are narrative-driven, not structure-driven
- Until all three signals confirm simultaneously, broad buying carries unnecessary risk
- The correct approach is selective positioning around specific catalysts
The Case For Altseason
Analyst Michaël van de Poppe reads the same market differently. He compared the current setup to DeFi Summer 2020 and said this summer could be comparable as long as Bitcoin stays flat.
His observations:
- Some altcoins have already posted 200% to 400% gains from their lows
- Laggard coins are beginning to follow the early movers
- Liquidity is starting to spread through the broader ecosystem
- Interest in crypto has fully returned after months of suppression
What the Volume Data Adds
Exchange volume for altcoins excluding Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, and BNB is increasing even as the overall market feels quiet. Capital is rotating into altcoins while mega-caps consolidate, suggesting active movement rather than idle positioning.

Whether that rotation is the beginning of structural altseason or a selective bull run within a still-defensive market is precisely what both analysts are debating.
