  • Jane Street holds over $1 billion across US spot Bitcoin ETFs at quarter-end.
  • BlackRock’s IBIT accounts for roughly $828 million of Jane Street’s ETF holdings.
  • Jane Street’s ETF position reflects its deep role in Bitcoin market-making work.

Quant trading giant Jane Street has disclosed more than $1 billion in U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF, with the bulk of its exposure concentrated in BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT). The filing provides a fresh look at how a major institutional trading firm is positioned within the rapidly expanding Bitcoin ETF market.

According to the disclosed holdings, Jane Street held roughly 24.9 million IBIT shares worth about $828 million at the end of the second quarter. The remaining exposure was spread across Bitcoin ETFs including Fidelity’s FBTC and Grayscale’s GBTC.

Importantly, the positions represent ETF shares rather than direct ownership of Bitcoin.

IBIT Accounts for the Bulk of Jane Street’s Exposure

Jane Street’s allocation to IBIT stands out among its disclosed Bitcoin ETF positions. The firm had reduced its IBIT holdings during the first quarter, cutting its position from around 20.3 million shares valued at approximately $790 million to about 5.9 million shares worth $225 million.

By June 30, however, the position had climbed back to 24.9 million shares, valued at roughly $828 million.

The reversal shows the scale of activity taking place around regulated Bitcoin investment products. It also places BlackRock’s IBIT at the centre of Jane Street’s disclosed Bitcoin ETF exposure.

Why Jane Street’s Position Needs Context

The $1 billion figure should not automatically be interpreted as a bullish Bitcoin bet. Jane Street operates as an authorized participant for several Bitcoin ETFs, including BlackRock and Fidelity products. These firms play an important role in creating and redeeming ETF shares and helping keep ETF prices aligned with the underlying Bitcoin market.

As a result, a large position can represent inventory associated with market-making and ETF activity rather than a pure directional investment.

Jane Street’s first-quarter reduction and subsequent second-quarter rebound therefore show significant movement in its ETF book, but the 13F disclosure alone does not reveal the firm’s complete trading strategy or any related hedges.

What the IBIT Allocation Says About Institutional Liquidity

Jane Street’s position shows the growing role of Bitcoin ETFs within institutional market infrastructure.

A major trading firm maintaining substantial exposure to products such as IBIT indicates that these ETFs have become important trading instruments for professional market participants. Large authorized participants can also contribute to smoother ETF creation and redemption activity, supporting liquidity around the products.

BlackRock’s IBIT has emerged as the largest allocation in Jane Street’s disclosed Bitcoin ETF portfolio, reinforcing its position as a major institutional vehicle for Bitcoin exposure.

Could More Institutional Traders Follow?

Jane Street is not the only institutional name appearing in recent Bitcoin ETF disclosures. The information provided also points to Tudor Investment Corporation rebuilding exposure to a BlackRock Bitcoin ETF product, alongside disclosures involving Edelman Financial and Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth funds.

However, these positions should not all be interpreted in the same way. A hedge fund position can represent an investment view, while a market maker’s holdings can reflect trading inventory and client activity.

For Bitcoin markets, the broader significance is that regulated ETFs are increasingly becoming part of institutional trading infrastructure.

Jane Street Also Expands MSTR Exposure

The filing also showed a substantial increase in Jane Street’s position in Strategy (MSTR). The firm added 2.47 million MSTR shares during the second quarter, increasing its holdings by 1,176% to 2.68 million shares valued at approximately $232.8 million as of June 30.

Strategy remains a major institutional proxy for Bitcoin exposure, although 13F filings do not disclose the full structure of any accompanying hedges.

What This Means for Bitcoin Traders

Jane Street’s more than $1 billion Bitcoin ETF position is important, but it is better viewed as evidence of deep institutional participation in Bitcoin’s regulated market structure than as a standalone prediction for Bitcoin’s next move.

The rebound in IBIT holdings also shows how quickly institutional ETF positions can change. As more trading firms, asset managers and institutional investors use spot Bitcoin ETFs, these products could play an increasingly important role in Bitcoin liquidity and institutional market access.

For now, the clearest signal from Jane Street’s filing is not simply that it holds more than $1 billion in Bitcoin ETFs. It is that one of the world’s major quantitative trading firms remains deeply involved in the infrastructure surrounding regulated Bitcoin exposure.
