- OpenAI’s $30B funding push puts capital at the center of its AI expansion plans.
- Anthropic’s proposed $45B deal could lift its Nscale commitments to about $90B.
- Data-center access is becoming central to the OpenAI–Anthropic leadership race.
OpenAI and Anthropic are extending their rivalry beyond model performance into a contest over capital and computing capacity. OpenAI is reportedly accelerating a $30 billion fundraising round, while Anthropic is negotiating a second $45 billion Nscale agreement.
OpenAI Moves to Secure Investor Capital
OpenAI is seeking commitments ahead of Anthropic’s expected November IPO, according to a report. SoftBank and Abu Dhabi’s MGX are among existing backers discussing participation.
Both companies are approaching an identical investor base. OpenAI’s accelerated timetable would help it secure funding before Anthropic’s financial disclosures give investors a fuller basis for comparing the businesses.
The round could value OpenAI at over $1.4 trillion, up from its $852 billion valuation in March. Its own public listing is expected in 2027. Investors familiar with OpenAI say fresh capital is needed to finance big infrastructure commitments and strengthen its balance sheet ahead of that offering.
Anthropic previously raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation to support compute expansion, research, and product development. Its focus includes enterprise customers and specialized coding workflows, while OpenAI serves a large consumer audience through ChatGPT and is expanding business services. Both companies need the capacity to train models and run those products.
Anthropic Pursues Another Nscale Facility
Anthropic’s expansion centers on physical capacity. Its talks with Nvidia-backed Nscale cover a second facility at the Monarch campus in West Virginia, potentially adding another $45 billion agreement. That would follow an initial deal of approximately $45 billion signed in August. If completed at the reported value, the second contract would bring the two agreements to about $90 billion.
The proposed second building would provide 460 megawatts of capacity and use Nvidia’s Vera Rubin chips. Anthropic would rent computing services to secure access to infrastructure for its Claude models.
While OpenAI is seeking fresh capital to fund its infrastructure commitments, Anthropic is negotiating a deal to secure additional computing capacity. Both moves highlight the growing financial demands of developing and operating advanced AI models.
Infrastructure Spending Raises Financial Risks
The competition for AI computing capacity comes with significant financing demands. Concerns over the debt used to build AI data centers, including CoreWeave’s roughly $50 billion debt load, have added to investor scrutiny of the sector.
For OpenAI, the proposed $30 billion fundraising round could help finance infrastructure commitments and strengthen its balance sheet ahead of a potential 2027 public listing. Anthropic’s proposed second $45 billion Nscale agreement, meanwhile, would secure additional computing capacity for its Claude models while adding to its long-term infrastructure commitments.
Neither transaction is finalized based on the reported details. OpenAI is still seeking investor commitments, while Anthropic’s additional Nscale agreement remains under negotiation. Their progress will help clarify how both companies plan to finance the computing resources needed to support future AI development and demand.
