OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is facing criticism after arguing that personal computers waste the world’s limited DRAM supply.
Speaking on the Cheeky Pint podcast, he said memory pooled in data centers would get far more use. Tech and crypto figures, including Elon Musk, quickly turned the idea into a meme.
Sam Altman’s RAM Pooling Comments Spark Backlash
Sam Altman made the comments during a conversation with Stripe co-founder John Collison. They were discussing whether people will run open-source AI models on their own machines.
“From a global allocation perspective, actually, it’s quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used 5 per cent of the time,” Altman said.
He added that cloud servers keep the same memory busy far more often. Altman did not propose taking RAM away from anyone, but the timing stung.
AI data center buildouts have squeezed memory supply, and people buying gaming PCs, laptops and graphics cards are already paying more.
Some engineers agreed with his logic, since shared servers spread memory across many users. Others noted that consumer RAM and the high-bandwidth memory used in AI servers are not interchangeable.
Elon Musk, Notch and Crypto Leaders Push Back Against Sam Altman
Musk responded on X with a meme based on Inglourious Basterds. He captioned it, “The people deserve to have their RAM too!”
Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson posted his own meme. “Tell Sam Altman that I use 64GB of RAM to play Roller Coaster Tycoon. I want him to know it was me,” it read.
Ripple’s David Schwartz also posted: “You can have my RAM when you pry it from my cold, dead hands. @sama, come at me bro!” he wrote.
Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson went further and said he would stop using ChatGPT. “Well then, I won’t be using ChatGPT any more! Thanks for dropping the mask. Next?” he posted.
Why OpenAI’s Memory Deals Add to the Debate Over AI and Consumer Hardware
Critics also point to OpenAI’s own buying. The company had earlier signed agreements with Samsung Electronics and SK hynix for its Stargate project. The chipmakers aimed to reach up to 900,000 DRAM wafer starts per month.
Since then, manufacturers have moved capacity toward high-bandwidth memory for AI chips, which leaves less conventional DRAM to go around.
S&P Global reported in January 2026 that analysts expected Samsung’s average conventional DRAM selling price to climb 116% this year. Deloitte found that AI server DRAM costs roughly doubled in the first quarter of 2026.
