  • Strategy and eight other industry players have launched the Bitcoin Security Consortium.
  • The consortium intends to help fund developers and researchers of the network.
  • The priority of the group is to find solutions for the potential quantum computing risks.

Michael Saylor’s Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) has teamed up with several crypto leaders to launch the Bitcoin Security Consortium. As the name suggests, this major initiative focuses on strengthening the cryptocurrency’s long-term security.

Notably, the project is backed by a total of nine financial giants, including BlackRock, Coinbase, Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, Block, Blockstream, Fidelity Digital Assets, Galaxy, and Strategy. Together, these founding members have pledged a combined $15 million over the next three years to support developers and researchers on the network.

Nine Industry Giants Launch Bitcoin Security Consortium

In an X post earlier today, Strategy founder Michael Saylor revealed the launch of the Bitcoin Security Consortium. With a $15 million pledge, the industry players intend to ensure the security and resilience of the Bitcoin network over the next three years. Strategy CEO Phong Le stated,

“As long-term holders, we have every incentive to see Bitcoin remain secure for generations. Funding the people who do this work, and helping inform the conversation around it, is a natural way for us to contribute.”

It is worth noting that the Bitcoin Security Consortium will provide financial support to developers, researchers, and organizations currently working to improve the network’s security. The project will also help prepare Bitcoin for future challenges, including the possible quantum computing risks.

What’s the Consortium’s Role in Bitcoin Development?

Significantly, the Bitcoin Security Consortium has clarified its role in the Bitcoin ecosystem, limited to network security. This indicates that the project does not have any role or influence in how the blockchain is developed. The group will not create or direct any changes to Bitcoin’s protocol. It will neither endorse proposed upgrades nor represent the Bitcoin community.

Instead, the core vision of the consortium is to help fund the network without controlling its development. Despite the formation of the Bitcoin Security Consortium, the blockchain network will continue to be decentralized, maintained by its global community of developers.

Supporters remain confident about the initiatives taken by Bitcoin core developers. BlackRock’s Robert Mitchnick stated that the consortium would provide “significant additional funding” to “support Bitcoin’s long-term security needs.” He added, “Bitcoin Core developers do incredibly important work.”

Quantum Security Remains a Key Focus

As many blockchain ecosystems have already revealed plans for post-quantum cryptography, the consortium is also putting its focus on Bitcoin’s security against possible threats. Although quantum computers do not exist today, experts believe that they are not too far away. This makes blockchains prepare for future quantum computing risks.

As noted by the Bitcoin Security Consortium, the group’s main priority is quantum computing security solutions. While developers are already exploring ways to fight these threats, the consortium is planning to help fund those efforts.
