- Crypto exchanges BitMEX, BitMart, and AscendEX are closing their operations soon.
- A concerning trend is emerging in the crypto industry as market conditions change.
- Stricter regulations, price volatility, and growing competition are some factors.
Another week, another crypto exchange is disappearing. As market conditions are changing, the crypto industry is experiencing a worrying trend. Existing crypto exchanges are exiting the space, with three big companies announcing their closure in the same month.
Earlier in July, AscendEX announced its official closure. Another giant, BitMEX, revealed similar plans soon. Just within a week, another major company, BitMart, joined the list, preparing to shut down.
These incidents have significantly sparked speculation and caution around the future of crypto exchanges. But what is driving these crypto exchange shutdowns?
Crypto Exchanges BitMEX and BitMart Announce Closures This Week
BitMEX, once a prominent crypto exchange, is now marking an end to its 11 years of operations. On July 23, 2026, the company stated that it is winding up its services from September 23, 2026. In addition, the platform has stopped new registrations, with immediate effect. The company has reportedly urged users to close their open positions before the mentioned date. According to the team, the decision followed a “strategic review of the business and the broader crypto industry.”
While BitMEX announced its closure, the platform is also facing legal challenges. Recently, two investors filed a class action lawsuit against the crypto exchange, claiming illegal liquidation. The plaintiffs alleged that the platform forcefully liquidated their positions, withholding their BTCs.
Soon, BitMart also announced its closure, sparking concerns. On July 26, 2026, BitMart shared an official X post, stating,
“After a careful evaluation of the Company’s operating conditions, market environment, and future strategic direction, BitMart has made the difficult decision to commence an orderly wind-down of its trading platform operations. We deeply regret having to make this decision.”
As per the announcement, BitMart is planning to cease its operations gradually instead of shutting down suddenly. The company has already disabled new registrations, deposits, API services, copy trading, and other automated features. The team added that all trading services will be completely terminated from August 26, 2026. Users have time until January 2027 to withdraw their assets before the platform officially closes.
These crypto exchanges haven’t cited any major reasons like hacks or vulnerabilities for their decisions. Instead, both companies noted changing market conditions and their long-term strategy as the factors that influenced their move.
AscendEX Closure Raises Concerns
AscendEX was the first major crypto exchange to announce its shutdown this month. Reportedly, the company has permanently closed its trading platform. It mentioned its failure to secure a MiCA license as the major reason for its business closure.
Significantly, this news has sparked widespread concerns among investors and the broader crypto community. This is mainly because the company’s official announcement stated that it could not guarantee the timing or deadlines of withdrawal. What is more concerning is that it even stated that some withdrawals may not be completed. Some reports also claimed that many investors had faced blocked withdrawals and unusually low exchange reserves for several weeks even before the closure announcement.
Why are Crypto Exchanges Shutting Down?
Interestingly, there is no single reason for the growing closures of crypto exchanges. There are several factors that possibly led to these incidents. The industry is now facing several challenges, including the broader negative trend surrounding the crypto market.
Since October 2025, the crypto market has been facing one of its toughest periods ever. This negative trend across the market has resulted in prolonged price volatility, lower trading activity, and declining investor participation. This has indeed reduced trading activity on many of the crypto exchanges. As trading fees remain a primary source of revenue for these platforms, crypto exchanges are now facing notable pressure, failing to remain profitable.
Another major reason is regulatory challenges. Many countries have now introduced tougher rules, making it difficult for crypto exchanges to comply with them. Especially for mid-sized companies, these systems are expensive.
Besides these reasons, growing competition in the crypto industry is also a major factor. The industry is now ruled by major players like Binance, Coinbase, Bybit, and OKX. As noted by a Kaiko analyst, BitMEX, which was once a leading crypto exchange, now accounts for less than 0.01% of the global digital asset trading market. The analyst stated, “The closure of BitMEX may suggest that major exchanges will continue to gain significant weight at the expense of smaller or newer exchanges.”
Thus, the recent shutdowns of crypto exchanges are part of a concerning trend beginning to emerge in the industry. Smaller crypto exchanges are being forced to wind down operations due to negative macro trends, stricter regulations, falling trading volume, and growing competition.
