- September CPI data could shift Fed rate expectations and trigger volatility in Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP and Cardano.
- Headline inflation is forecast to rise to 3.6% annually, while core CPI is expected to ease to 2.5%.
- Softer inflation could support crypto prices, while hotter-than-expected data may lift yields.
Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, and Cardano face a key macroeconomic test as the United States prepares to release its September Consumer Price Index (CPI) report on October 14.
The data will shape expectations for the Federal Reserve’s next interest rate decision and influence whether the crypto market faces another round of selling.
According to the Forex Factory economic calendar, the report is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time, or 12:30 p.m. UTC. Economists expect headline inflation to accelerate while core inflation cools slightly, setting up two distinct paths for risk assets.
US CPI and Core CPI Expectations
September headline CPI is forecast to rise 0.6% month over month, up from 0.4% in August. The annual rate is expected to increase to 3.6% from 3.4%.
Meanwhile, core CPI, which excludes food and energy prices, is projected to rise 0.2% month over month, down from 0.3% previously. The annual core rate is expected to climb to 2.5% from 2.4%.
This divergence matters because rising energy prices are expected to drive much of the increase in headline inflation. Reuters reported that US gasoline prices surged 7.1% in September, intensifying inflation concerns.
The core reading will determine whether price pressures are spreading beyond food and energy. A lower monthly core reading would reassure investors, while a hotter figure would revive concerns that the Federal Reserve will keep monetary policy restrictive for longer.
How CPI Will Influence Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP and ADA
The inflation report will affect cryptocurrencies through interest rate expectations, Treasury yields, the US dollar, and investor risk appetite.
Bitcoin (BTC)
Bitcoin was trading around $83,691 at the time of the report. Its immediate direction hinges on whether inflation exceeds or falls short of expectations.
A softer-than-expected CPI reading would ease expectations for further Fed tightening and support buying interest in Bitcoin. A stronger reading would push yields and the dollar higher, putting downward pressure on BTC.
Ethereum (ETH)
Ethereum was trading around $2,514 ahead of the release. A softer inflation reading would support ETH by improving risk appetite, while a hotter CPI report would push Treasury yields higher and encourage investors to reduce exposure to riskier assets.
XRP
XRP was trading around $1.37 ahead of the CPI release. Softer inflation would support a crypto recovery by weakening the dollar and improving investor risk appetite. This environment would give XRP room to recover from recent weakness.
A hotter-than-expected report would increase selling pressure, particularly as XRP has recently traded below its early-October levels.
Cardano (ADA)
Cardano was trading near $0.236 on October 14. ADA stands to benefit if softer inflation encourages investors to return to altcoins. Lower Treasury yields and a weaker dollar would improve the environment for speculative assets.
However, a stronger CPI reading would reinforce the dollar, raise expectations for tighter monetary policy, and leave ADA exposed to further selling.
Unlike Bitcoin, which attracts greater institutional attention, ADA is more sensitive to shifts in speculative appetite across the altcoin market.
What Crypto Traders Should Watch
The September CPI report arrives as investors weigh persistent energy-price pressures against signs of moderating underlying inflation. Markets largely expect the Federal Reserve to hold rates steady at its October meeting, although the inflation data will shape expectations for subsequent policy decisions.
For crypto traders, three indicators deserve close attention after the release:
- Monthly core CPI: This figure will show whether underlying inflation is cooling or accelerating.
- The US dollar: A stronger dollar typically pressures cryptocurrencies, while a weaker dollar supports risk appetite.
- US Treasury yields: Rising yields increase the appeal of traditional fixed-income assets and often weigh on speculative investments.
Ultimately, Bitcoin and altcoins will hinge on CPI results, market positioning, and Fed policy expectations.
