Zcash developers have moved to address questions about the network’s Ironwood upgrade, explaining that users do not need to wait for the migration from Orchard to verify the cryptocurrency’s circulating supply.

The clarification follows public discussion about a vulnerability discovered in Orchard earlier this year and whether it could have resulted in undetected inflation. According to Zcash co-founder Zooko, anyone can independently verify the current supply of 16,848,458 ZEC on a local computer today, while contributors also explained why the migration to Ironwood is not expected to reach a traditional completion point.

Why the Ironwood Migration Raised Questions

The discussion gained attention after Boston Zcash responded to questions about when the Ironwood migration would be “complete.” The contributor explained that such a move is unlikely because some funds will never move from Orchard. Private keys can be lost, small balances may remain permanently unspent, and developer testing funds may never be recovered.

Earlier shielded pools, including Sprout, introduced in 2016, and Sapling, launched in 2018, still hold more than half a million ZEC years after their creation.

Instead of measuring success by migration progress, Boston Zcash said users should focus on the protocol’s accounting rules. Once Ironwood is active, Orchard no longer accepts new deposits or internal transfers. Funds can leave the pool only through a protocol-controlled turnstile that records every withdrawal against the amount that was previously entered into Orchard.

How Users Can Verify ZEC Locally

Zooko said users can verify the current ZEC supply on their own computers by running a fully synchronized Zcash node and checking the blockchain’s recorded supply, rather than waiting months or years for wallet migrations.

Following the updates, Frank Braun added that moving funds from Orchard to Ironwood provides additional assurance that those coins cannot be affected by any hypothetical inflation within Orchard, while noting that the overall ZEC supply remains auditable today.

Zooko agreed with that assessment but cautioned that users migrating funds should use Nym or Tor, as the migration process can expose the IP address associated with a ZEC balance.

Additional Changes Included in Ironwood

Beyond the migration process, the upgrade introduces ZIP 2005, adding quantum-recoverable notes intended to support future fund recovery if quantum computing weakens current encryption methods. Developers said the feature does not make the network fully quantum-safe today, but it lays the groundwork for future recovery tools.

The upgrade also incorporates formal verification of Ironwood’s balance integrity. According to Project Tachyon, researchers completed a machine-checked mathematical proof designed to demonstrate that the protocol’s critical balance rules operate according to their intended specifications.
