Anthropic ended the week with two developments that strengthened its position in the artificial intelligence race. First, President Donald Trump softened his stance following a dispute over foreign access to the company’s advanced models.
Second, Nobel laureate John Jumper announced that he would leave Google DeepMind to join the rival AI laboratory. Together, the developments gave Anthropic both a regulatory reprieve and a major scientific recruitment victory.
Trump Eases Security Concerns After Anthropic Restricts Models
In an interview with “The Axios Show,” Trump said he no longer viewed the company or chief executive Dario Amodei as a national security threat. Asked whether that concern existed one week earlier, he replied that it “maybe” did.
The dispute centered on foreign access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5. Per earlier reports, the company disabled both models after Trump ordered it to block foreign nationals from accessing them.
However, Trump said the company’s swift response helped ease the administration’s concerns. He praised Amodei for acting “very quickly” and “responsibly” in complying with the export control directive.
The remarks came as senior Anthropic technical staff prepared to meet administration officials to discuss the matter further. The shift in tone followed a meeting between Trump, other G7 leaders, and technology executives, including Amodei, during a summit in France.
Although the president did not rule out invoking the Defense Production Act, he suggested that such a step might no longer be necessary. On the other hand, an Anthropic spokesperson said the company remained focused on protecting critical infrastructure while supporting continued U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence.
Anthropic Recruits AlphaFold Nobel Laureate From Google
The second gain came through Jumper, who shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis. Their award recognized work on AlphaFold, an artificial intelligence system that predicts three-dimensional protein structures.
AlphaFold has generated predictions for more than 200 million protein structures. The technology has accelerated research across medicine, genetics, and drug discovery, replacing work that previously required years or decades.
Jumper said his final period at Google focused on artificial intelligence coding tools rather than the scientific work behind his Nobel recognition. He described DeepMind as a “special place” and said he would take a short break before joining Anthropic.
His future role, nonetheless, has not been disclosed. His departure makes him the third senior DeepMind researcher to leave within three months.
