  • AI leads crypto narratives with 4,844% YTD gains, according to DeFiLlama data.
  • DeFi ranks second with 442% gains, followed by perpetuals and derivatives at 187%.
  • Data availability and liquid staking also posted gains, but sector performance varies across tokens.

The artificial intelligence (AI) sector has emerged as the best-performing crypto narrative of 2026 so far. Decentralized finance (DeFi), perpetuals, and derivatives follow closely, according to DeFiLlama’s Narrative Tracker.

The data, captured on October 29, ranks crypto sectors by their year-to-date (YTD) performance to highlight where market gains have been concentrated this year. Decentralized exchanges (DEXs) and liquid staking protocol tokens also feature among the leading categories.

The rankings offer a snapshot of how investor interest has shifted across the crypto market, with infrastructure, decentralized trading, and AI-related projects attracting attention.

AI Leads Crypto Narratives in 2026

AI ranks first on DeFiLlama’s YTD leaderboard, up about 4,844%. The category includes 1,452 coins, giving it much more extensive coverage than several other leading sectors.

The performance places AI-related crypto assets ahead of established DeFi and trading categories. However, the scale of the gain also means that individual tokens with outsized price increases may have influenced the category’s results.

AI-related crypto projects generally focus on decentralized computing, autonomous agents, data infrastructure, and blockchain-based payments for AI services. These applications create several distinct areas where speculative demand and interest in emerging technology can converge.

DeFi ranks second, up about 442%. The category covers 847 coins and includes protocols offering decentralized trading, lending, borrowing, and other financial services.

DeFi’s position suggests that investors have continued to allocate capital to blockchain financial applications despite competition from newer narratives.

Perpetuals, Data Availability, and DEXs Follow

Perpetuals and derivatives rank third, up about 187% year to date. The category contains 79 coins associated with crypto derivatives markets. These products allow traders to take leveraged positions and hedge existing holdings.

Data availability ranks fourth, up about 141%. The sector covers infrastructure that makes blockchain transaction data accessible for verification and use by networks and applications.

As blockchain ecosystems expand, data availability solutions help address the technical requirements of scaling transactions and supporting applications that rely on off-chain data publication or verification.

Decentralized exchanges follow in fifth place, posting a gain of approximately 138%. DEX platforms enable users to trade tokens through blockchain-based protocols rather than relying entirely on centralized intermediaries.

Liquid Staking and Social Crypto Also Post Gains

Liquid staking protocol tokens rank sixth, up about 83.6% in supplied YTD data. These protocols allow users to stake crypto assets while receiving representative tokens that can be used in other decentralized applications, subject to each protocol’s design and risks.

Social crypto ranks seventh, gaining approximately 73.9%. Projects in this category connect blockchain technology with social platforms, online communities, and creator-focused applications.

Restaking takes eighth place, up about 59.6%. Restaking protocols seek to extend the economic use of staked assets by allowing them to support additional services or infrastructure, depending on the protocol.

These categories demonstrate that performance has extended beyond AI and mainstream DeFi into specialized blockchain services.

What the Rankings Mean for Investors

DeFiLlama calculates sector performance using market-cap-weighted token price changes, excluding stablecoins. This means not every token in a category recorded the same gains or even made a profit.

The rankings reflect token prices, not necessarily user growth or project strength. AI’s huge lead may also be driven by a few tokens with exceptional gains.

Overall, the October data shows AI leading the crypto market, while DeFi, derivatives, and DEXs also perform strongly. However, these rankings change as market conditions shift.
