  • Bitcoin faces potential volatility as the 2026 US midterm elections raise concerns.
  • Historical data shows BTC saw major corrections after the 2014, 2018, and 2022 elections.
  • Traders remain divided on whether BTC could face a sell-off or see a post-election recovery.

Bitcoin is often sensitive to major political events. Now, the cryptocurrency is approaching the 2026 US midterm elections, an event that has historically influenced its movements. While many remain cautious of a Bitcoin price crash amid political and regulatory uncertainty, some expect a post-election rally.

US Midterm Elections Approach: Is Bitcoin Under Pressure?

The 2026 US midterm elections are expected to take place tomorrow. This has put Bitcoin in focus. While the election determines the future government of the country, it could influence the direction of US crypto policies and regulations.

As CoinEdition reported yesterday, the odds of Democrats winning the election are rising. This sparks uncertainty over the crypto-related proposals and regulations introduced by Donald Trump. Any major shift in these policies could significantly affect Bitcoin and the broader crypto market.

Thus, the community believes that the current uncertainty could lead to increasing selling pressure on BTC. But others believe that the market may have already priced in much of the uncertainty. However, the real impact could only be understood after the election results and how they affect the Bitcoin price.

Drawing Parallels with 2022 Bitcoin Price Crash

Notably, Bitcoin saw a sharp price correction during the 2022 US midterm election period. At that time, BTC was trading at $20,000. The coin continued to fall and dropped below $16,000 by November 21, 2022. This marked a 24% fall from its pre-election level

In an X post, analyst Ash Crypto shared a possible comparison between the 2022 and 2026 US elections. He projected a similar Bitcoin price crash during the upcoming election. The analyst has urged traders to remain cautious and avoid taking leveraged positions.

However, it is worth noting that the reason behind the Bitcoin crash in 2022 was not limited to the mid-term elections alone. One of the main reasons was the FTX collapse. Also, the market had already been under pressure due to higher interest rates and regulatory issues. All these factors contributed to the market correction.

Is a Post-Election Rally Possible?

Driven by historical patterns, many investors fear that the cryptocurrency may see a major sell-off event. But there are also traders who see the election as a possible turning point for the market. They believe that much of the political uncertainty may already be reflected in the BTC price. If the election results remove some of these concerns, it could also result in a renewed buying interest in the cryptocurrency.

Historical Patterns Show Mixed Signals

It is important to mention that the Bitcoin price has often seen severe lows after US midterm elections. For example, in January 2015, December 2018, and November 2022, BTC saw post-election corrections, varying from 13 to 71 days.

BTC has also faced pressure ahead of previous midterm elections. In 2018, it fell around 29% in the six months before the election. A similar pattern was also seen in 2022, when it dropped by about 37%. But this does not mean that the elections directly caused the declines.

However, this year, the pattern looks different. The Bitcoin price saw its lowest price in July, when it reached around $57k. While this drop happened about four months before the election, the coin has managed to recover and surge above $81.

What To Watch After Elections?

Interestingly, there is a lot more to watch beyond the election results to understand the potential movement of the Bitcoin price. At first, it needs to be understood who will lead the government and how they treat crypto. The new administration’s approach to the crypto policies and regulations introduced by President Trump is something important to watch.

CLARITY Act is now stalled in the Senate without progress. If the new government fails to pass the crypto bill, it could significantly impact the market, pushing the Bitcoin price down. Other existing crypto proposals also need to advance under the new administration to confirm BTC’s sustained momentum.  Other factors include the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy, institutional interest in crypto, Bitcoin ETF inflows, and overall investor sentiment.
