Aptos Labs has introduced MonoMove, a proposed execution engine designed to significantly improve smart contract performance across the Aptos blockchain. Internal testing showed major speed improvements across several workloads, although developers have not yet demonstrated those results on mainnet. Aptos plans to complete MonoMove’s features this year before pursuing a governance-approved mainnet rollout in 2027.

MonoMove Tests Show Major Performance Gains

Significantly, Aptos tested MonoMove by replaying real transactions from onchain trading platform DecibelTrade. Some collateral withdrawals executed up to 55 times faster than with the current Move virtual machine.

Moreover, vault requests and perpetual-market operations recorded substantial improvements. Order placement also became considerably faster during Aptos’ internal testing.

Additionally, broader financial simulations produced up to 11 times higher sequential throughput. These workloads included payments, lending, and order-book trading.

However, Aptos said storage now represents a larger performance constraint. Consequently, faster contract execution will not automatically produce equivalent network-wide speed improvements.

Aptos Targets 2027 Mainnet Deployment

Besides performance improvements, MonoMove introduces additional runtime checks designed to identify potential implementation problems. Aptos also uses differential testing to compare results between both execution systems.

Moreover, developers plan formal verification for critical components. Aptos expects feature completeness by year-end, while governance approval remains necessary before the planned 2027 deployment.
