Google Quantum AI has developed a new technique that reduces errors in quantum computing by 40 times, making quantum computers more reliable and efficient.

Published in Science, the technique, called “magic state cultivation,” was tested on Google’s Willow quantum processor and achieved 99.99% accuracy. This milestone is a step toward building quantum computers that can correct their own errors.

Google Solves a Major Quantum Computing Challenge

Magic states help quantum computers perform complex calculations. However, creating these states with high accuracy requires a lot of computing power. In fact, producing them could use up to 95% of a quantum computer’s resources.

Another challenge is that magic states cannot be reused once they have been used in a calculation. Researchers have spent about 20 years looking for ways to make them more efficiently.

Google’s new technique, called magic state cultivation, tackles this problem by creating a quantum state in a small part of the processor and using measurements to detect and remove errors. This produces a more accurate, reliable state that can be used in larger quantum computing systems.

Google’s Willow Processor Reduces Errors 40 Times

Google researchers developed the magic state cultivation technique in 2024, building on earlier research. To test it successfully, the team had to improve the processor’s controls and measurement methods. They found that changes in electrical equipment and temperature were affecting their results, so they developed a better way to measure the technique’s performance.

These improvements helped them demonstrate a 40-fold reduction in errors on Google’s Willow processor.

The experiment also showed that researchers could transfer purified quantum states between two different error-correction methods, called color codes and surface codes. This proves that these states can be moved between the two systems while remaining reliable, a step toward building more practical quantum computers.

What This Breakthrough Means for Quantum Computing

Reducing the resources needed to create magic states could make future quantum computers more efficient. It would free up more processing power to solve complex problems instead of correcting errors.

The breakthrough also shows that magic state cultivation works on real quantum hardware, not just in theory. However, Google says it needs more research to scale up the technique before it can be used in larger, practical quantum computers.

Overall, this is a key step toward building reliable quantum computers that solve problems too difficult for traditional computers.
