  • Kalshi and Polymarket have recorded $2.7 billion in crypto-related prediction market volume in a single week.
  • Bitcoin price bets drove most of the activity, making crypto the second most traded category after sports.
  • High trading volume may reflect recycled short-term speculation rather than new capital entering Bitcoin.

In mid-October 2026, total volume in crypto-related prediction markets on Kalshi and Polymarket hit a record $2.7 billion in one week, driven heavily by short-term bets on Bitcoin’s (BTC) price fluctuations.

However, the weekly volume represents high-frequency transaction turnover, not net new capital flowing directly into Bitcoin. The real question for crypto traders and investors now is whether the increase is a sign of capital being shifted or of short-term speculators returning.

Kalshi and Polymarket Hit $2.7B in Weekly Crypto Volume, Led By Bitcoin Bets

Kalshi and Polymarket have seen roughly $2.7 billion in weekly crypto-related event-contract turnover, the highest to date for the category. Most of the trading volume was placed on Bitcoin price bets.

Kalshi’s Bitcoin contracts alone generated more than $2 billion, driven overwhelmingly by its 15-minute up/down markets. Polymarket’s contribution was smaller, with its U.S. arm logging roughly $92–101 million in 15-minute Bitcoin volume during its first full week of operation.

However, the $2.7 billion is notional volume, which is the total face value of payout contracts traded, usually priced at $1. It is not an indicator of net capital invested in Bitcoin exposure. Since new 15-minute contracts are available at any time, approximately 96 windows a day, the same capital can be rolled through one market to the next, creating a high turnover without the open risk increasing accordingly.

Are Prediction Markets Becoming Alternative to Derivatives or Just Recycled Speculation?

Crypto has become the second biggest category on both platforms after sports, coming on the heels of lower spot trading volume from major exchanges.

Prediction markets now offer bets on BTC price direction without needing to hold BTC or use leveraged margin. As short-term alternatives to derivatives, a 15-minute contract pays out on settlement, caps losses at the premium paid, and allows early exits.

Meanwhile, studies of thousands of Kalshi Bitcoin contracts suggest that prices can reflect the likelihood of an outcome. For instance, contracts that cost 50 cents settle successfully about half of the time, whereas high-priced contracts tend to win more often. This suggests the markets can provide useful short-term forecasts beyond a simple coin toss.

But correct predictions don’t mean investors are shifting their long-term assets from Bitcoin or traditional derivatives. The same cash could pass through a variety of contracts, leading to inflated volume compared to capital at risk. For now, the activity could just be a sign of intense short-term speculation on Bitcoin’s movements and not a lasting trend of how traders invest.

What This Means for Crypto Traders and the Industry

Bitcoin prediction contracts are a unique combination of perpetual futures and traditional binary options. On Kalshi, fees depend on the contract price, while the bid-ask spread adds to trading costs. There are rules governing the settlement process, and losses are capped. Unlike perpetual futures, they have no funding rates or liquidation risk.

Perpetual futures provide greater liquidity and lower percentage trading fees, but also come with funding payments, volatility, and potential liquidation with leverage. Traditional binary options can also be more opaque in terms of pricing, offer fewer early-exit options, and feature less favourable payout structures.

For traders, the choice depends on their strategy, costs, and risk tolerance. Fifteen-minute prediction contracts provide a way to trade Bitcoin’s short-term direction without holding BTC, but frequent trading can quickly accumulate fees and spreads.

Although contract prices can indicate the market’s estimated probability of an outcome, that does not guarantee accurate forecasts of subsequent Bitcoin spot prices. The real issue is whether these markets provide reliable price discovery signals or primarily serve to move around speculating capital. A sustained increase in liquidity and open interest may give a clear indication that the market has moved away from traditional derivatives.
