The cryptocurrency community has expressed outrage towards a data collection policy adopted by the digital wallet company, MetaMask. Developer ConsenSys announced an update clarifying the policy details.

The wallet provider’s privacy policy was updated in November, followed by multiple reports stating that MetaMask would be collecting users’ wallets and IP addresses, which acquired a negative reaction from the public.

In response, on December 6, ConsenSys published a blog to reassure MetaMask and toolkit Infura users about the new data retention policies, as well as, how their implementation would affect the users of the platform.

The blog claimed that the policies are in alignment with enhanced transparency while emphasizing that the software company prioritizes the privacy of people who use its products and will never let “yet another centralized entity” betray its users.

In a couple of pointers, ConsenSys explained that it doesn’t store wallet account address information when a MetaMask user makes a “read” request through Infura, for instance, to check their account balances within MetaMask.

Hence, it will not be able to associate an account address with an IP address, solely on the basis of the above-mentioned user activity.

In addition, it doesn’t collect wallet and IP address information in connection with “write” requests, also known as transactions, when MetaMask users broadcast transactions through Infura’s RPC endpoints.

Moreover, it clarified that IP addresses and wallet address data linking to a transaction are not stored together in any way that will allow its systems to connect the two data together.

However, the crypto community doesn’t appear to be convinced, given the endless criticism that currently is floating around on Reddit alongside other social media platforms. Users are also discussing a highly-anticipated governance token to prevent changes like this.
