The crypto market has faced a challenging week, with several platforms reporting security breaches. One of the major incidents was the $6.3 billion Binance hack, which raised concerns about the safety of funds held in crypto exchanges. Adding fuel to these discussions, OKX CEO Star Xu criticized the security practices of competing crypto exchanges.

OKX CEO Slams Crypto Exchange Security After Binance Hack

In an X post earlier today, OKX CEO Star Xu shed light on the growing concerns over the security practices of crypto exchanges. He questioned how some prominent platforms manage security risks and protect their internal systems.

Notably, Xu’s comments came after the recent Binance hack that resulted in the loss of about $6.3 billion. While the OKX CEO has not pointed out any exchange by name, his statements have certainly drawn attention because of their coincidental timing. Yet since there have been several security breaches at platforms such as Bithumb, Polymarket, and Chainalysis during the last week, the statement of the CEO may also apply to other exchanges.

In another X post, Xu directly criticized Binance’s response to the incident. He accused its leaders, including Founder Changpeng Zhao, of avoiding responsibility, shifting blame, and downplaying security concerns. He also highlighted the market impact of the incident, including Bitcoin’s price decline, billions in liquidations, and damage to the crypto industry’s reputation.

How Did Hackers Steal $6.3 Billion From Binance?

In this context, it is important to explain how the Binance hack took place. The incident involved a series of attacks targeting the exchange’s employees and internal systems. Using fake interviews and malicious software, the hackers managed to gain access to employee devices.

Initially, the attacker approached an employee via a fake job opportunity. The employee was asked to download malicious software, which helped them gain access to sensitive information about Binance’s internal systems.

With this access, the hacker compromised the exchange’s wallet infrastructure. Then they exploited its wallets’ vulnerability to transfer funds to their own addresses. The hackers stole cryptocurrencies worth more than $6 billion, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), XRP, and Solana (SOL).

Are User Funds Safe?

Significantly, the Binance hack has raised concerns about whether user funds remain safe. Amid growing concerns, the exchange assured that the company would cover the losses. The platform has also taken initiatives to address the security issue. It has strengthened internal security controls, reviewed employee access, and improved its wallet protection systems.

In addition, the crypto exchange has also frozen or recovered a major portion of the stolen funds. This highlights that the company is making efforts to recover the assets.

Does OKX Offer Better Security Than Binance?

After Star Xu posted his comments, questions emerged about OKX’s security system. The community is now questioning whether OKX has a better security system than Binance. But Xu’s criticism alone cannot prove that OKX is safer than any other exchange.

Also, Xu stated, “I genuinely don’t want to criticize a competitor during their crisis. What I really want is for us to work together with them to raise security standards and better protect the entire crypto industry.”

Both OKX and Binance have their own security measures to protect customer funds. These include cold wallet storage, proof-of-reserves reports, withdrawal protection, and account security features. In addition to protecting wallets, they have also taken security measures for employee access, internal systems, third-party software, and risk management.

Should Investors Leave Centralized Exchanges?

Interestingly, the recent security breaches have raised questions about the security issues of centralized crypto exchanges. Traders remain confused about whether they need to move away from CEXs. While these platforms provide an easier way to buy, sell, and trade assets, they also come with security risks.

It is important to note that investors who keep their assets on exchanges may lose their funds if hackers gain access to the platform’s internal systems. To avoid such risks, traders can move long-term holdings to private wallets. Investors can control their private keys with the help of hardware wallets and other self-custody solutions.

What Should Investors Check Before Choosing a Crypto Exchange?

Trading fees and available tokens should not be the only things that make traders choose a crypto exchange. There are things beyond these factors that traders should consider. Investors and traders should check the platform’s security measures, proof of reserves, regulatory compliance, and history of security breaches.

It is also important to understand how the platform protects user funds and handles security incidents. A transparent exchange with clear security policies can help traders make a more informed decision.
