Ripple Pushes XRP Into AI Payments With New Starter Kit Update

Ripple has updated its XRP Ledger AI Starter Kit to now support the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP), an open payment standard built with Stripe and Tempo, plus the Open Wallet Standard.

Ripple’s version 1.1 Starter Kit handles payments in XRP and RLUSD, its dollar-backed stablecoin. Also, the Open Wallet Standard lets software work with wallets on different blockchains through one shared interface.

It was reported that this integration can handle one-off payments and recurring XRP payment sessions. However, stablecoin payment sessions would need a proposed XRPL upgrade that isn’t live yet.

Regarding the Stripe connection, it’s important to note that Ripple hasn’t announced that Stripe is adding XRP to its regular checkout products. Instead, what Ripple is doing is making XRP and RLUSD work with a payment standard that Stripe and Tempo built for machine-to-machine transactions, which gives developers using that standard another way to settle payments.

Ripple’s Push Into AI Payments

Ripple introduced the XRP Ledger AI Starter Kit back in June 2026 with support for the x402 protocol. This allowed AI agents to pay for APIs, AI model runs, and other digital services using XRP or RLUSD.

The company stated that XRPL settles transactions in three to five seconds and keeps fees predictable. Those qualities could matter a lot when software is making lots of small payments.

Ripple’s whole idea is to let AI agents behave more like participants in the economy. If an AI is working on a task, it might need to buy API access, computing power, data, or software. Instead of stopping and asking a person to make every payment, the AI can use a wallet with set permissions and auto-approve transactions within those limits.

Interestingly, there is already evidence of experimentation on XRPL. 

Recent data shows that an AI payment hub had handled almost 4.5 million transactions, but very little XRP had actually been settled in the process. This is notable because a high volume of transactions doesn’t necessarily mean there’s real demand to buy or hold XRP.

Either way, this direction points to a goal where Ripple is trying to cast XRP and RLUSD not only as payment tools for people and businesses, but also as programmable settlement options for a future where AI agents can buy computing power and online services on their own.
