- J.P. Morgan forecasts 10% annual Bitcoin returns, above U.S. stocks and gold.
- Bitcoin stays outside core models due to 55% volatility and unstable correlations.
- Lower volatility and steadier correlations could improve Bitcoin’s portfolio role.
J.P. Morgan Asset Management forecasts a 10% compound annual return for Bitcoin in its base-case scenario, placing it ahead of U.S. stocks and gold in its long-term outlook. However, the firm has kept BTC outside its core portfolio models due to high volatility and unstable relationships with other assets complicating its role in strategic allocations.
The projection appears in the 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions, the firm’s 31st annual outlook covering 10 to 15 years. For the first time, the publication includes a range of possible Bitcoin returns.
Why Bitcoin Remains Outside Core Models
Despite introducing that forecast, J.P. Morgan has excluded Bitcoin from its main covariance matrices. These models capture assets’ volatility and how their returns move together, helping investors assess risk across a portfolio.
Instead, the firm has published a smaller, separate matrix comparing Bitcoin with selected public-market assets. This allows analysts to examine its possible performance without incorporating it into the standard allocation framework.
The variation points to diversification concerns. Because Bitcoin’s correlations with other markets change over time, J.P. Morgan says it remains difficult to determine its contribution to a strategic portfolio.
Its projected annual volatility is also 55%, compared with roughly 18% for U.S. large-cap stocks. The higher return forecast, therefore, comes alongside much larger expected fluctuations.
Bitcoin’s Returns vs. Stocks and Gold
J.P. Morgan’s compound return estimates put U.S. large-cap stocks at 7.5%, U.S. real estate investment trusts at 8.2%, and gold at 5.5%. Bitcoin’s 10% projection exceeds all three.
However, the report separately estimates Bitcoin’s arithmetic annual return at 20.9%. Arithmetic returns average individual yearly results, while compound returns reflect how investment gains and losses accumulate.
What Could Change Bitcoin’s Portfolio Role
J.P. Morgan said Bitcoin’s portfolio role could improve if volatility declines and correlations stabilize. Clearer regulation, stronger liquidity and better price discovery could also support a reassessment.
Meanwhile, Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan welcomed the forecast but disputed the 55% volatility assumption. He argued that it was too high, pointing to Bitcoin’s declining volatility over the past 15 years.
