- Standard Chartered launches institutional BTC and ETH spot trading in the UAE.
- Bank becomes first G-SIB to offer deliverable crypto trading in the Gulf region.
- Move could accelerate bank adoption and tokenization across UAE markets.
On September 3, 2026, Standard Chartered announced the expansion of its institutional Bitcoin (BTC/USD) and Ether (ETH/USD) spot trading in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) through its Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). This milestone marks Standard Chartered as the first Global Systemically Important Bank (G-SIB) to offer deliverable spot crypto trading directly to institutional clients in the Gulf region.
Standard Chartered Opens First G-SIB Bitcoin and Ether Spot Desk in UAE
Standard Chartered has announced the launch of institutional deliverable spot trading for Bitcoin and Ether in the UAE through its Standard Chartered DIFC entity. The bank becomes the first G-SIB to offer this service in the UAE and is currently the only global bank providing institutional digital-asset spot trading in the region.
The UAE expansion follows the bank’s earlier move in July 2025, when Standard Chartered became the first G-SIB to offer deliverable spot crypto trading to institutional clients through its UK branch. The latest launch extends that capability into the Gulf as the bank continues to expand its institutional digital asset offering.
In addition, the latest UAE trading desk supports Standard Chartered’s broader digital-assets strategy, which covers custody, trading and tokenisation capabilities through its Corporate and Investment Bank. Its ventures arm further extends these capabilities via platforms such as Zodia Markets and Libeara.
More Banks May Follow Into UAE Crypto Trading and Tokenization
Standard Chartered’s move could accelerate institutional crypto trading across the UAE. As institutional demand for Bitcoin and Ether spot trading grows and the country’s regulated digital asset market matures, more banks are likely to follow.
This move may also boost the tokenization trend across the UAE. Banks are already working on tokenized deposits, crypto custody, and projects for digital bonds and stablecoins. Bank of New York Mellon began offering Bitcoin and Ether custody in Abu Dhabi earlier this year. HSBC launched tokenized deposits for corporate clients in the UAE in June, while First Abu Dhabi Bank has tested tokenized deposits and taken part in digital bond and stablecoin projects. This growing infrastructure could make wider bank participation in crypto trading more feasible.
