A discussion over Bitcoin’s long-term outlook received attention after venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya argued that two structural shifts are affecting the crypto market, prompting responses from several prominent industry figures.
While Palihapitiya suggested that speculative capital and computing resources are increasingly moving away from Bitcoin, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, Strike CEO Jack Mallers, and market commentator MartyParty each challenged different parts of his assessment, offering contrasting views on what drives Bitcoin’s long-term performance.
Palihapitiya Points to Liquidity and AI Competition
In a post on X, Palihapitiya said Bitcoin bulls currently face two key challenges. First, he argued that liquidity is increasingly flowing into prediction and equity markets rather than into cryptocurrencies.
Second, he said the energy that could be used for Bitcoin mining is now worth more if redirected toward supporting AI-related computing, estimating that such resources could generate 10 to 20 times more value.
He described both developments as potentially structural changes, while acknowledging that his assessment could prove incorrect.
Industry Figures Dispute the Outlook
The comments drew responses from several well-known participants in the digital asset sector. Market commentator MartyParty described Palihapitiya’s view as contextual and temporary. He argued that crypto serves as infrastructure for future economic activity, including AI, while describing Bitcoin as a transportable sovereign asset outside the traditional financial system.
He also stated that liquidity conditions have changed under financial repression and said the current shift toward speculation and centralization is temporary.
Jack Mallers also rejected both points raised by Palihapitiya. He said capital moving into prediction markets, memecoins, or AI-related assets was never a source of durable Bitcoin demand. According to Mallers, Bitcoin’s long-term objective is to function as money and a store of savings rather than compete for speculative capital.
Addressing mining, Mallers said Bitcoin’s protocol automatically adjusts to available computing power through its difficulty adjustment mechanism, allowing the network to continue producing blocks regardless of changes in overall hash rate.
Armstrong Highlights Inflation Focus
Brian Armstrong agreed that the first issue identified by Palihapitiya appeared temporary, while describing competition for computing resources as potentially more lasting. However, he said the amount of energy devoted to Bitcoin mining does not determine the asset’s price because mining difficulty adjusts when miners leave the network.
Armstrong added that, over the long term, Bitcoin’s price is primarily influenced by public concerns about inflation, noting that democracies continue to operate with persistent budget deficits. Separately, Ansem responded to Palihapitiya’s post with a brief comment, stating that the observation came “10 months late.”
